Halaal way of Sacrifice in Islam.
The word 'Halaal' literally means permissible - and in translation it is usually used as lawful. The Halaal food rules are based on Islamic Shari'ah. The antonym to Halaal is ‘Haraam’, which means unlawful or forbidden. It is well known all over the world, that Muslims consume Halaal meat.
There are some things we Muslims are supposed to eat and some which are strictly prohibited.
Allah the Almighty has mentioned both of them very clearly in the Holy Quran. Below are a couple of verses from Surah Maidah and Surah Al Baqarah.
“O you mankind! Eat of what is on earth, Lawful and good; and do not follow the footsteps of the devil, for he is to you an avowed enemy.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 168.
"He has only forbidden you what dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that over which any other (name) than (that of) Allah has been invoked; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit, no sin shall be upon him; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."
— Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 173.
“Forbidden for you are dead meat, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that which has been slaughtered while proclaiming the name of any other than God, and one killed by strangling, and one killed with blunt weapons, and one which died by falling, and that which was gored by the horns of some animal, and one eaten by a wild beast, except those whom you slaughter; and that which is slaughtered at the altar and that which is distributed by the throwing of arrows [for an omen]; this is an act of sin.”
— Surah Maidah, Aayah 3.
So to summarize on the above Aayats, the following foods are forbidden to Muslims:
1) Blood, specifically flowing blood. This is because it is impossible to avoid blood in animals; however with draining much of the flowing blood can be removed.
2) Pork, Swine, Pig.
3) Any food dedicated to other than Allah.
4) Any food over which you have not mentioned the name of Allah.
5) Animals which are dead before you slaughter them (carrion). Under this category are animals that: -
a. Have fallen to their death.
b. Have been strangled to death.
c. Have been killed by a blow.
d. Have been gored to death.
6) Anything which is bad to the health like Alcohol or any other forms of intoxicants.
Let us talk into detail on Animal Slaughtering, as this is a topic in which many of us are not fully aware of.
There are 3 things always to remember at the time of slaughtering an animal in the name of Almighty Allah.
1) Firstly, we need to mention these words, “BISMILLAHI ALLAHU AKBAR” while slaughtering the animal. This is because we are taking life of a living being and we are doing this only in the name and wish of Allah the Almighty. The knife should be sharp, so that the animal does not feel pain at the time of sacrifice.
2) We need to make sure that the wind pipe, 2 Jugular Veins and 2 Carotid Arteries are cut from the animal’s throat. If this is not possible, then at least 3 of these 4 veins should be cut for the blood to flow completely.
3) We need to make sure that the spinal cord is NOT to be cut at the time of making ‘Zabiha’ or Slaughter. We need to give at least 5-10 minutes of time for the entire blood to be drained out of the animal, and only then, separate the head.
Nowadays, the Butchers or ‘Khassab’ are in a hurry at the time of Eid as they need to go to various places to complete their daily target for earning money. They don’t care in what way they cut the animal. If they cut the Spinal Cord and separate the head before the entire blood has drained out, then the animal becomes Haraam for us to consume. This is because the blood is a high media of toxins and bacteria and it becomes poisonous for us to eat if it’s not drained out completely.
Many people in our Society are also not aware of this and they are dependent on the ‘Khassab’ for obtaining their meat after sacrifice. We need make everyone aware, as this is a very critical matter and of great importance.
Criticize of Halaal Sacrifice by other Religions:
There are a lot of religions who criticize Islamic way of sacrificing animals and they think that we Muslims torture the animal because of letting them struggle for a long time.
The swift cutting of vessels of the neck disconnects the flow of blood to the nerve of the brain responsible for pain. Thus the animal does not feel pain. While dying, the animal struggles, writhers, shakes and kicks, not due to pain, but due to the contraction and relaxation of the muscles deficient in blood and due to the flow of blood out of the body. During this phase, the entire blood keeps flowing out of the body which keeps the meat fresh for a longer period of time. This is because the body has released all the toxins, germs and bacteria which were present in the blood.
In the Western and Non-Muslims countries, the animals are killed using electric shock, which causes the blood to stagnate in the body and thus accumulate in the meat itself. This is a high factor of providing innumerable diseases to everyone who eats it.
But there has been a lot of research done on the Halaal meat and many scientists including Non-Muslims have concluded that the meat is more fresh and tender; when cut with the name of Allah, and after following the complete steps of sacrifice. Many of the Non-Muslims all over the globe prefer to have Halaal Meat over the other, as they are aware of its benefits.
A Few words regarding Fast Food Restaurants.
Keeping above things in mind, I want to mention a few words on the present Fast Food Restaurants that are spread all over the world, especially in India. A lot of people express their desire to eat meat at the famous Food centers like KFC, McDonalds, Dominos, Pizza Hut, etc.
My Dear Islamic Students, Friends, Brothers and Sisters. I know the taste and smell in these centers is very tempting, but we need to make sure of a few things over here.
Firstly, most of these Fast Food centers are owned by Israelis and Non-Muslims, and they do not care about the way Muslims are destined to eat. We have to make sure what we eat is provided in the name of Allah and should also be through a Halaalsource.
Let’s come to the second point.
We know that it is mandatory to say ‘BISMILLAHI ALLAHU AKBAR’ at the time of slaughtering the animal. Now these companies prepare meat dishes for people of all religions and they themselves are not Muslims. Do you really think that they say ‘BISMILLAHI ALLAHU AKBAR’ before cutting the animal? Do you think that they care so much about the Muslims that they ignore their own traditions and care about the Muslims traditions?
Finally, we have seen how critical is the way to slaughter an animal and how careful we need to be for the blood to be drained out before we consume it. Do you think that these companies wait for 5-10 minutes for each animal to be totally drained of blood, ignoring the Spinal Cord at the time of sacrificing so that they have to serve these to Muslims? Are they really that empathetic towards Muslims?
NO! My Dear Muslims. Of course they are NOT! Many of us are ignorant of these facts and blindly eat everything that comes in our way. There are a lot of restaurants owned by Muslims who make good food following the traditions of Quran and Sunnah. Why don’t we eat there?
Please remind yourself that Allah is watching and what we eat in these restaurants is totally contradicting of the things that are mentioned in the Quran in the above Aayats.
Let us pray to Allah that may HE give us knowledge and courage of accepting what we have read above, and also to educate other people to do the same.
WA SALLALLAHU TAALA ALAA SAYYIDINA MUHAMMADIN WA ALAA AALIHI WASAHBIHI AJMAEEN.
